When should I start taking my baby to the dentist?
No-one enjoys going to the dentist but it is necessary to reduce the risk of conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease. So the sooner you or your baby gets into the habit of doing so the better.
Can you ever be too young to start visiting the dentist? Many parents take their baby to the dentist when they are 6 or 7 months old so there is no minimum age limit.
Combine this visit with a dental care routine for your baby. Start doing this as soon as their milk teeth emerge in order to protect these teeth from the risk of decay. Unfortunately, tooth decay can start at a very early age so it is better to prevent this as soon as possible.
Your dentist will be able to advise you about the best ways of caring for your baby's teeth as well as performing a check up. Plus he will recommend brands of fluoride toothpaste which are designed for babies.
We would recommend taking your baby to the dentist as soon as they are teething so that your dentist can check the condition of these teeth. Plus it helps to eliminate any fear or anxiety caused by an unfamiliar environment.
The first visit is the most important one so try to make it a fun event for your baby and give him a few extra cuddles and treats afterwards. But do not give sweets or other sugary foods as these treats.
Once your baby becomes accustomed to these visits it will be seen as a normal event rather than something to be dreaded. Your baby (and toddler) will get to know your dentist and feel relaxed with him (or her). It helps if your dentist is good with babies and children and has the right manner but if not then ask other mums for the name of their dentist or ask the staff at a health clinic.
The reason behind this is prevention rather than cure. It is easier to prevent tooth decay and other conditions from developing in the first place rather than treating the outcomes.
